Corona isn't the only plague that is sweeping the world come 2020, a far larger risk to human life has been sweeping the subcontinent, the famine that will be caused by one of the largest outbreaks of locust swarms ever recorded, thought to have originated in Yemen and Somalia, both countries that have been devastated by war over the last couple of years. A perfect place for the swarms to first start breeding and growing as their governments already have enough on their plates, but as it spreads into Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea and Oman.

Stick live updates on the red button and show what's actually going on in the world. The news isn’t even reality TV no more, showing us Corona updates then a fluff piece to put our hearts at ease like: “aww look there is good in the world”. While somehow making our NHS seem like a charity, when most of us pay our taxes to fund our healthcare system, yet companies like Starbucks gets away with avoidance, $5.9 million (that would buy a lot of ventilators) and still have the cheek to be fucking up my name, more time.
Back to the swarm at hand, Locust can consume their own body weight (2g) in food a day. A typical swarm which this is not can be made up of 150 million locusts per square kilometre and is carried by the wind 150 km in per day. Again, a small swarm of around 40 million locusts (one square kilometre swarm) can consume enough food to feed 35,000 people in a day.
Desert locusts are the most destructive of all species and 200 billion of them were recorded flying through Kenya which equates to them consuming enough food to feed 84 million people per day. The sad fact of the matter is this famine will kill the people where food was already a major insecurity. The UN estimated that already 24 million people are facing food shortages. In Ethiopia alone it is estimated that 8 million may need food aid due to these swarms.
But what worries me is the people who wanted to test coronavirus antidotes in Africa, these same people will probably profit from the deaths/migration of these people due to sheer land grabbing opportunities, that's if china has not indebted and economically captured that land already.
The UN is currently seeking $138 million to protect livelihoods and pest control in the three worst affected countries. Fighting this battle is an incredibly expensive one, the last outbreak in 2003-2005 which was tiny in comparison to this one cost $450 million in prevention of crop damage and at the end of the swarm the crop destroyed was at totalled $2.5 billion.
This swarm could last till the end of the year and by the looks of 2020 it probably will. The cost of human life will be great due to starvation, in 2020 people are still starving, I've always found that mad. But it's a fact of life, life’s a lottery. Many of these people will be forced to migrate to the west where they will be shunned and looked at like scroungers when their forefathers were oppressed by colonial rule, shunned in the same country that they helped build up.
